Commitment required: A Commitment of One Year, a minimum of 3 Shifts Per Month (9 hours Per Month) + Orientation and Training
Typical Shift: 3-hour shifts Monday-Friday during business hours (typically 9am-12pm or 1pm-4pm)
Child Space Volunteers provide a compassionate presence, emotional support, and stability for children and their families as they access the Child Space at the Luna Centre.
Duties and Responsibilities
Greet families as they enter the Child Space in a friendly and sensitive manner.
Provide child supervision while caregivers meet with staff and partners.
Engage children in positive play opportunities that promote optimal development, self-expression, and a sense of familiarity and control.
Share talents in arts, craft-making, music, etc. with children who wish to take part.
Provide reception coverage when needed; Checking clients in and notifying staff when their clients have arrived.
Maintain an overall tidy atmosphere and assist with cleaning the space and toys as needed.
Stock and tidy refreshment areas and kitchens throughout Luna.
Support the Child Life Specialist and other Luna staff members in projects and other duties as requested.
Optional Call-Out Opportunities: Volunteers may choose to be included on a call-out list for daytime and evening coverage when additional support is needed at the centre.
*Child Space Volunteers do not provide counselling, specific legal advice, investigation, or medical intervention.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Interested and enthusiastic about providing a safe, warm, and caring atmosphere for children and their families that are dealing with child abuse.
Comfortable providing safe supervised play experiences in a warm and caring manner that is sensitive to each child and family’s needs.
Excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
Ability to demonstrate maturity, reliability, and punctuality as well as a strong work ethic.
Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with sensitive information.
Sensitivity towards family histories, potential impacts of previous experiences, and cultural differences.
Desire to work independently and take initiative within a cross-functional team environment.
Previous experience working or volunteering with children and youth considered an asset but not required.
