Support for Children with Problematic Sexual Behaviour

Some sexual play between children, such as playing doctor or looking at private parts, may be considered typical for their age. However, some sexual behaviours are inappropriate and can be potentially harmful to children; they may be repeated, intrusive, aggressive, or may involve pressure or force.

There isn’t one type of child who develops problematic sexual behaviour; many children can exhibit problematic sexual behaviour. While some of these children have been sexually abused, many have not. Research tells us that many factors can play a role in a child developing problematic sexual behaviour, for example:

  • Exposure to sexual material (such as pornography)

  • Exposure to family violence

  • Physical abuse or neglect

  • Other non-sexual behavioural challenges, such as impulsivity and difficulties with social skills

If you have concerns about your child’s behaviour, know that support is available.

Luna’s Alberta Health Services Therapy Team offers assessment and treatment services for children with problematic sexual behaviour.

Help Begins with a Phone Call

Luna’s Alberta Health Services Therapy services are at no-cost to Albertans. Referrals are accepted from:

  • Parents and legal guardians

  • Child and Family Services

  • Mental health, medical, school, and other professionals

  • Calgary Police Service, RCMP, and other law enforcement agencies

Services are available for children 7 to 13 years of age and their caregivers when behaviours include a combination of the following:

  • Involving other children in sexual acts

  • Repeatedly exposing themselves to others

  • Repeatedly accessing pornography, even after adults have stepped in

  • Excessive masturbation

  • Failure to recognize socially acceptable physical boundaries

We are unable to provide services for children 12-13 years of age who:

  • Have been, or will be, charged under the Youth Criminal Justice Act with an offense related to their sexual behaviour

  • Have sexualized behaviours within dating relationships

Consultation and/or brief services may be offered to families for children six and under who are displaying concerning sexual behaviour

To refer a child:

1) Please call, and leave a message with, the Child Abuse Service Intake line: (403) 428-5320

2) An Intake Clinician will call you to book a telephone appointment to gather more information and complete the referral.  The referral will help determine if Child Abuse Service is the best fit to meet your child’s needs.

  • If your child’s referral is accepted and meets the criteria for services, recommendations for support may include brief parent/caregiver focused services or an assessment to determine if treatment is required.

  • Treatment services are provided in either a family-based or group format based on assessment findings and recommendations.

  • As parents/caregivers are essential in supporting children with problematic sexual behaviour concerns, your participation will be important.
