Volunteer Spotlight: Clara Vasic

Since joining Luna in January 2024, Clara has been an essential part of our Court Team, volunteering once a week as a Court Admin Advocate. In this role, she provides compassionate support to families navigating the court process — offering referrals, keeping case notes up to date, coordinating with the team, and following up with families after sentencing.

A University of Calgary student majoring in psychology with minors in sociology and law & society, Clara first chose Luna for a practical reason — it was close to campus. But once she started, she fell in love with the work and the environment. “It’s difficult work, but I really enjoy it. I feel like I fit in, and it’s such a great place to be,” she says.

Volunteering at Luna has not only deepened her understanding of how the court system supports victims of abuse but also shaped her future goals. The experience inspired her to pursue graduate studies in psychology or social work — a shift from her original plan to study law.

Outside of Luna, Clara channels her curiosity into true crime, keeps busy with her two energetic huskies, and loves tackling escape rooms with friends — often coming out victorious.

When asked what she’s learned most from her time at Luna, she reflects:

“It sounds obvious, but just realizing how needed this work is has been so eye-opening. Being able to help families understand the court process and feel supported has been incredibly meaningful.”

How long have you been volunteering with Luna?

I've been here for a year and a half. I started in January 2024.

What do you do in your volunteer role?

I am a Court Admin Advocate. I’m on the court team, and I reach out to family members to provide support, provide court supports, make referrals, update case notes, and keep the court team informed. I also engage with VAST and complete follow-ups with families after sentencing. I volunteer once per week.

Why did you decide to volunteer with Luna?

Honestly, the initial reason was a bit boring — it was close to my school. I go to the University of Calgary. I had a friend who volunteered here, and she had really good things to say. But after starting, I ended up falling in love with it. It’s difficult work, but I really enjoy it. I feel like I fit in, and it’s such a great environment. Plus, it is so convenient!

What is the most rewarding part of volunteering at Luna?

It fits perfectly with what I’m studying, so I feel super engaged. It feels like I’m doing something meaningful for a vulnerable group. I’m majoring in psychology and have declared two minors in sociology and law & society, so I feel like I have every angle covered here. Volunteering has really helped me with my schooling too.

What are your goals when it comes to volunteering at Luna?

You know what? Working here has actually been eye-opening and has made me want to continue with my master’s. I’ve started looking more into the psychology and social work fields rather than law, which is the direction I was leaning before. This role has helped solidify what I’m good at and the space I want to work in in the future.

What have you learned from your volunteer role that you can apply to the rest of your life?

It sounds obvious, but just the fact that Luna exists and that this kind of work is needed — you don’t hear about it as often as you’d think. That’s been really eye-opening. I’ve also learned how the court process works for victims. Being able to inform families and help them understand the process has been really helpful in my day-to-day life.

Outside of your role at Luna, what interests keep you busy?

I’m a total true crime junkie — I keep up with it like crazy. I’m definitely one of those people. I also have two huskies, so playing with them keeps me busy; they’re high-energy and super dramatic. My friend and I are obsessed with escape rooms — that’s our thing. We’ve done lots in Calgary and we've even gone to Banff. Our next goal is to go to Edmonton. Recently we’ve been on a winning streak. I think we’ve figured out the inside secrets now!
